Dose for your pool
On this page

How much muriatic acid should I add?

If your acid-demand chart calls for 8 fl oz per 10,000 gallons, a 15,000-gallon pool needs 12 fl oz of that same acid. Enter the chart dose and your own pool size above.

First run the acid-demand test included with your kit. Count the drops needed to reach the target pH color, then read the matching treatment-chart row. Taylor’s #5165 instructions point to Guidebook #2004B for these amounts.

Check the acid strength on the bottle

Common muriatic acid strengths include 31.45% and 14.5% hydrochloric acid. Choose a chart written for your bottle’s strength: a dose for stronger acid will not give the same result with weaker acid.

The strength selector helps you record this match. To switch products, get the dose for the new strength from its treatment chart.

Circulate and check the result

Apply acid as directed on the bottle, following the treatment chart’s maximum addition. Circulate for the stated time, then test pH and alkalinity again; acid lowers both.

If chlorine is above the pH test’s measuring limit, follow the kit’s instructions before reading the color result.

Add, circulate, then retest

Follow the product label for application and mixing time, then retest before adding more. Keep chemicals separate: never mix chlorine with acid or other chemicals.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Common questions

How much acid does a 10,000-gallon pool need?

Use the 10,000-gallon dose in your acid-demand chart for your test result and acid strength. Other pool sizes scale proportionally: 15,000 gallons uses 1.5 times that dose.

Can I use the same dose for half-strength acid?

Use the treatment chart for that product’s concentration. Liquid volume depends on both strength and density, so a percentage ratio alone is not enough for an exact conversion.

Can I use dry acid instead?

Use the pool pH calculator with the treatment-chart dose and weight unit for your dry-acid product. This page is for liquid muriatic acid.
