Identify the existing pool system
Vinyl liner replacement, cementitious interior refinishing and fiberglass surface repair are different jobs. Ask the contractor to identify the existing substrate and finish before recommending a replacement system.
This page is a quote-planning checklist. It publishes no dollar range and no finish lifespan, because local rates and site conditions decide both. Manufacturer planning guidance also warns that location and installation complexity change final pool-project costs.
Ask every contractor to define the same work
| Line item | Required detail |
|---|---|
| Measured interior area | Floor, walls, steps, benches and any excluded surfaces |
| Preparation | Removal method, adhesion preparation, disposal and site protection |
| Repairs | Treatment of cracks, hollow areas or exposed substrate, priced separately |
| New finish | Exact product, color, application scope and installer requirements |
| Edges and fittings | Tile, coping, drains and fittings included or excluded |
| Return to service | Refill responsibility, start-up procedure and follow-up inspection |
Use finish area, not pool footprint
A flat rectangular example 30 feet long, 15 feet wide and 4 feet deep has 450 square feet of floor and 360 square feet of vertical wall, before steps or other details. Its simplified interior area is therefore 810 square feet, not the 450-square-foot footprint.
Slopes, curved walls and built-in seating change the measurement. Ask the contractor to show the measured area and identify what its quoted rate includes; a rate that excludes preparation is different from a complete installed rate.
Separate a surface finish from a structural repair
Ask whether the observed damage requires a separate diagnosis before cosmetic work. A new finish should not be treated as proof that an unexplained leak or movement has been resolved.
Have the professional plan draining and groundwater precautions. Request the exact finish supplier's start-up and water-balance instructions, the responsible party for that work and written warranty terms before accepting the quote.
Common questions
Can I estimate resurfacing from gallons?
Not reliably. The same water volume can have different wall, floor, step and bench areas. Obtain an interior-area measurement for the proposed scope.
Are tile and coping included?
Only if the quote says so. Require explicit dimensions, materials and preparation for those items instead of assuming they are part of the finish price.
